September 2011

In September we always have lots of fun buying bulbs, and planning colour combinations and structures for our spring displays.
Tulips for example flower different times, according to variety, and we must be very careful to plan colour combinations that actually flower together to create the desired effect.
The flowering time is not clearly specified on the packet, which usually says simply "early", "mid-season" or "late". Experience of local conditions and using varieties for many years, and above all our careful record-keeping, allows us to achieve the displays we are so well-known for.
Narcissus varieties also flower over a long period, and some come out reliably as early as February.
Alliums of course are all later, some as late as July or August!
Combinations of flowering grasses and late alliums can be spectacular. Watch out for some of our displays around Hampstead next spring and summer.
