February 2010

If you haven’t already done it, there is still time to plant shrubs and climbers.

If you want to plant trees or new hedges, hurry hurry hurry!! Time really is running out. Taxus (yew) is especially sensitive to planting too late. And root-balled or bare-rooted trees will soon be unavailable. When you have finished your new planting, now is the time to empty out your compost bin, and spread it over the beds and borders. If you don’t have compost, you can buy rotted farmyard manure in neat and tidy odour free bags.

If you don’t already have bird nest-boxes or bat-boxes in your garden put some up now. Use different types of nest boxes - for example:

For tits

For robins or sparrows

And place them about 6 feet up in a shady and sheltered spot, amongst
overhanging ivy or climbers, or in a dense shrub or tree. Birds like to feel
their home is hidden from predators.
