August 2011

The dry hot weather of May and June seems a distant memory now, and it looks like 2011 will be remembered as a cool and rainy summer.
Despite the rain there seem to be a lot more bees and butterflies around this year. maybe the lovely April and May weather let them build up their numbers.
Insects generally are having a better time in cities than in the countryside. This seems to be due to increasing awareness among city dwellers of the need to reduce the use of insecticides and to be "wildlife friendly", and due also to the hostility of the countryside to insects, with few wildflowers, and the flowers of trees and of crops only available for short periods.
In gardens, on the other hand, there are usually flowers present all through the spring and summer, making a haven for insects.
